Bouncers' checks come into force

Regulations for bouncers and security industry staff dealing with the public are coming into force across Scotland.

The new rules will be overseen by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

The regulations will apply to staff such as nightclub bouncers, store security guards, bodyguards and CCTV operators.

To qualify for a licence, door staff must have their identity and criminal background checked, undergo training and sit exams with an accredited firm.

The staff will have to clearly display their licence badge when working.

Any establishment employing unlicensed door supervisors risks losing its premises' licence.

The SIA said the benefits of regulation had already been seen in England, where licensing has been in force for the past three years.

A spokeswoman said: "Residual criminality within the industry is being driven out, customer confidence has been enhanced and a more professional industry is developing."
